The Weekly Report Cornerstone

   WEEK 14 March 25th to 31st 2002

   WANTON DESTRUCTION

In a detailed study scientists have documented one of Sweden's major unsung environmental disasters.
Damages to the soil by forestry lead to dramatic increases of Mercury in lakes, waterfalls and water supplies. The study by, among others the Swedish Environmental Institute (Svenska Miljoestyrelsen AB), is centered on a lake outside the city of Gothenburg, famous/infamous for other world-shaking events the previous year.
The summer of 1999 the soil was damaged during forestry and lumber transport.
The concentrations of highly toxic Mercury in the lake increased a hundred-folk virtually over night.
Mercury content in the lake both before and after the incident has been thoroughly documented. No one is disputing the actual numbers.
Spokesmen for the lumber industry say, "one must expect and accept certain unexpected results of man's use of natural resources".
